چکیده

A common problem in creating interactive drama is the authoring bottleneck. If pre-authored stories are directly incorporated into an interactive virtual environment then there is a need to consider all possible interactions and story twists, which for a sizeable drama is infeasible. One proposed solution to this problem is to use search and planning algorithms along with narrative structures. This leads to a huge state space and planning becomes intractable for real-time solutions. A way to address this problem is to distribute the story planning to autonomous characters so that the drama emerges from their interactions. However without predefined structure or directives the drama is unlikely to emerge into the intended story or even the intended genre. We propose to divide the drama into narrative episodes which we call schemas. Schemas are used by a director and a set of actors to structure the drama so that it emerges into a fully developed drama. The schemas are pre-authored in an abstract way such that they can be deployed multiple times in the same drama, which removes the authoring bottleneck. In this article, we define the structure of the schemas and how the director and actors use schemas in Directed Emergent Drama

Qualifying Dissertation Directed Emergent Drama

Substantial research effort has been put into creating a truly interactive drama that is not only entertaining but also gives the player a sense of coherency and that she is an active participant in the unfolding drama. A fully interactive drama has the potential of revolutionising entertainment, gaming, education, therapy and news coverage. If pre-authored stories are directly implemented into...

Directed Emergent Drama vs. Pen & Paper Role-Playing Games

This is a position paper on the difference in role-playing between Computer-Based Role-Playing Games (CB-RPGs) and Pen & Paper Role-Playing Games (PP-RPGs) and how the architecture of the Directed Emergent Drama (DED) engine will facilitate more of the core characteristics of PP-RPGs than current CB-RPGs do.

Distributed Drama Management: Beyond Double Appraisal in Emergent Narrative

In this technical paper, we describe an implementation of Distributed Drama Management (DDM). DDM is a concept which involves synthetic actor agents in an Emergent Narrative scenario acting on both an in-character level, which reflects the concerns of the characters, and an out-of-character level, which reflects the concerns of a storyteller. By selecting the most “dramatically appropriate” act...

International Workshop on Emergent Semantics and Ontology Evolution

Until recently, most data interoperability techniques involved central components, e.g., global schemas or ontologies, to overcome semantic heterogeneity for enabling transparent access to heterogeneous data sources. Today, however, with the democratization of tools facilitating knowledge elicitation in machineprocessable formats, one cannot rely on global, centralized schemas anymore as knowle...

Duality of Actor and Character Goals in Virtual Drama

Actor agents in a virtual reality and interactive drama must deliver a believable performance. This is challenging and many issues need to be resolved. One prominent problem is that the goals of a character in an emergent interactive drama may conflict with demands for coherency in the drama’s progress. We propose an approach to resolve this that uses Object Oriented Bayesian networks and intel...
